2/24/10 - Gravel fill (compacted every 1' depth) beneath house slab & besides root cellar walls for proper slab bearing.
Adrienne D: The trench around the perimeter of the root cellar is lined with geotextile fabric to keep the stone from getting all silted-up.
The red machine used in this photo is a vibratory compactor so that the stone is nicely tamped down. By doing this, unpredictable settlement around the perimeter of the house is reduced.
